Animal Success Stories

Thank you so much for wanting us to share our story.  We lost our cat of sixteen years, Ruby, to cancer in October.
We were so sadden by her loss.
On New Year's Eve 2008 we walked into adopt-a-cat and were overwhelmed by how many cats and kittens were there.
My nine year old daughter Jaden was looking into one of the cages when she felt someone tap her on the shoulder.  When she turned around,
she saw the cutest kitten, and the rest is history.  Tuxy picked us, and we couldn't be happier he did.  Tuxy has quite an identity complex,
he lives with three dogs who adore him and treat him like a fellow canine, so he thinks he's a dog.  He likes to roll over on his back and have
his tummy scratched.  His best friend is our wiener dog, Dash. You can find them on the floor wrestling several times a day.
Thank you Adopt-a-Cat for such a wonderful addition to our family.

                      Sincerely,
                      Jan Gillman

We adopted Vivian in March 2007 as a companion for our other kitty Sabrina.  Vivian didn't like being taken from her Adopt-A-Cat home at first
and actually bolted out any open door.  We were not very confident about her staying with us then, but soon she came to realize that this new home
she had was not so bad after all.  Vivian has taken a little while to warm up to us.  She has always been affectionate  and LOVES attention,
but she was very skittish at first and rather than be approached, she likes to be the one to initiate contact.  Things certainly have changed
since those first few months.  We now have 3 kitties in our house and Vivian is a great friend to both.  She has gained a lot of confidence
and now will venture all over the house and loves to get into bed with us at night. (I think she has finally realized what a good home she has.)
Where she used to be standoffish and let the other cats go ahead of her, she is now more assertive and will push right to the front of the line
for her treats or petting.  She has her own places in the house, which she will share if necessary, but in reality, everyone knows that these are her
special places.  We have moved from West Palm Beach, now living in Colorado Springs, CO.  Vivian enjoyed the trip out here,
although she was very unsure of the long drive in that cage she doesn't really like. She answered to her name when called in the car and
enjoyed the company of her other kitty friends in their cages right beside her. Now she enjoys the cold nights near the fireplace
or on her special pillow by the radiator. She has her own special place on the recliner in the living room, where we have made a bed for her
(really, she picked the place, we just gave her a cat bed to make it a bit more comfy). Spring has finally come to the Rocky Mountains
and so Vivian and her feline siblings are allowed in the yard when we are there to supervise.  She is enjoying all the birds
coming to the feeders and flowers we have and is even a bit more than curious about the squirrels that come through the yard.
She has her favorite windows to watch all the goings on around our little house.

We are truly blessed to have made this wonderful addition to our lives.  We had first visited Adopt-a-Cat in November of 2006.
Vivian was there, a cute little tortie that would pull your hand back to her if you stopped petting her.  We were in love then, but unsure if a new cat,
the holidays and our present cat were a very good idea at the time. We returned to Adopt-A-Cat in March and found our little girl was still there.
We were sure it was her when she would pull our hands back to her when we stopped petting and knew she was for us. Her name on her papers
says Mud Momma, but we were certain that was not appropriate for this little lady we had in our presence. We knew her name had to be more dignified,
a lady's name. With many suggestions from friends and family we chose Vivian and it seems appropriate. She now comes to her name
(or at least knows we are talking to her, she is a cat after all).  She enjoys her days here in our little house, with its many windows and
her brother and sister. She is the neutralizing force between these other two cats we have. Where, while they don't get along with each other,
they both get along with Vivian.  It has been a rough road getting her to accept us and being an indoor kitty, we believe she may have been feral
and had at least one litter of kittens before she found her way to Adopt-A-Cat, but I think she has warmed up to the idea and is learning how to
manipulate us in all her cat glory. Lord knows, she has managed to manipulate our hearts!  It is truly a wonderful thing to come home to her
and all her appreciation of us. We look forward to many rewarding years with our little lady and all the maturity and changes those years will bring.

On the morning of March 18, 2006 I drove to the Adopt a Cat facility after being told by a friend that they had too many cats
and he had seen a picture of some of the kitties that he felt I would like.  My cat of 12 years had passed away
and it was time to find the perfect little companion.  When I got to the store, one of the TV stations was there to film the adoption process
and asked if they could observe me as I interviewed the kitties. I sat on the floor and let them come to me,
until this silky all black and very thin kitty slowly crawled on my lap. I knew she was the one, she was shy and thin
but had to cutest little nose and face. They had named her Godiva at the store, but I renamed her Cassiopeia,
which is the name of a constellation and means "Queen of Ethiopia", her nick name is Cassie.
She has been the sweetest and most loving cat I have ever had. She has one quirky habit,
she has a foot fetish and loves to lick bare feet, which is not what you would expect out of a Queen.
I hope this story will entice others to adopt a cat.

Hello,
My husband and I adopted Louie from Adopt a Cat right around Jan/Feb .'05.    We saw him in the window of Pet Supplies Plus.
We were immediately drawn to him because he looked so much like our Max who disappeared around nine years of age in 1995.
We had never before had such an affectionate cat as Max.  We rescued Max from death row at Animal Regulation on the day he was to be euthanasied.
He was a cat that we will never forget so when we saw our Louie in the window the first thing we said was how much he looked like Max.
We went in, inquired, and as soon as my husband picked him up he started purring and we just fell in love with him.
He is even more affectionate that our beloved Max, constantly wanting to be held and be near us especially my husband.
He does seem to prefer men and I think it's because of that initial contact with my husband.
God bless your organization for never giving up.  We feel Louie is a blessing to our family.

My name is Donna McDonald,  I adopted 3 brothers, I wanted to adopt 2 cats at most.
Needless to say, I was overwhelmed at first, since I have 2 large dogs and wasn't sure how the meeting would play out.
As you can see from the photo, everyone seems to feel right at home.  So far it seems to be working.

I think if people just give it a chance they would see how much joy and fun they can have with a cat or two.

Good luck with your website.

I was fortunate enough to live with my dear friend and companion a wonderful (neutered) male Tabby CAT that I adopted 27 years earlier from the
St Thomas Shelter In the Virgin Islands. When he finally passed over, at yes 27 years of age...I did not think I could have another cat for quite awhile.

Then as Luck would have it...my mom ran into a lady who was caring for a wee infant kitten at AdoptACat and she just had a feeling...
when she mentioned the kitten to me something in my heart felt right and we went over to see the wee one....
he was not in great shape but I KNEW he was the one for me so agreed to wait until he got stronger and so would come once a week to visit him.

While doing that each visit a sweet natured "Mr. Personality" kitten about 6 months older caught my attention
(he was known as "Carrot" back then) and I thought, Hmmm I think I should adopt this one too.

It has been such a wonderful experience although going from living with a mature sainted Old Gentleman to KITTENS
was like being invaded by the TALIBAN...in fact I joked That I should have named them Osama & Saddam or BIG EVIL & Little EVIL
as they were known for awhile ha-ha

But seriously they have brought so much JOY and comfort and entertainment to our lives that there are not words to convey my gratitude
to AdoptACat and other organizations like them for bringing us together with these amazing and wonderful little creatures...who bring so VERY MUCH to our lives!

Here are ROMEO...we HAD to call him that (Formerly CARROT) and The BABY...and we HAD to call him that HA-HA as even though he is a big boy now...
he will always be The BABY of our little family...AND "HE" KNOWS IT!!! ha-ha

My life is so happy and joyful because of my dear wee "Little Boys" ....
who though from different litters are absolutely bonded as brothers and have been since day one.

Thank you to all the wonder people at AdoptACat and blessings on all who open their hearts and homes to these dear and precious little friends.
Sincerely,
Debrina, ROMEO & The Baby Woods

I love my adopt-a-cat kitties! I have two girls from there: Martini and Olive (Ollie).
Martini is very intelligent, sweet and loving; Ollie is funny, energetic and athletic.
I have two boys: Sam and Jack (from the pound)

You do great work.

Thanks!

I adopted our cat Nala in April 2008 (her name was Mary then) to keep our other cat company.
She was very skittish and I didn't think she could become the cat I wanted.  I almost brought her back.
She was also pretty sick with some type of stomach virus.  It took about 6 months of taking her to the vet,
but I finally realized that if I feed her digestive formula she is fine.  She is now the perfect pet.
She still doesn't want me to hold her, but if she comes to me on her terms she is very lovable.
Attached are a couple of pictures of her.

Attached is a picture of Bentley my adopted cat along with his buddy George.
George is on the left and Bentley is on the right.

Bentley was adopted in 2005 from Adopt-A-Cat Foundation. When we first saw him,
we couldn't resist his adorable face and wonderful, spirited personality. When we brought him home,
he fit in perfectly with our family acting as if he had been with us from the beginning.
Now 4 years later, he enjoys playing with his "brother" George and sleeping all day!

I hope this helps with your website. I have been praying all of the remaining cats find a perfect forever home!

I adopted Elmo (who is now Sebastian) on March 15.  He was very
skittish for quite a while (a week or so), hiding in the tub and
running from me much of the time.

I spent a lot of time working with him--even sitting in the tub with
him and petting him, talking to him, and I am slightly embarrassed to
say, even singing to him.  He is much better now.  He LOVES
affection...his favorite thing is to lie beside me and show me his
belly or chin for scratching.  He also LOVES to watch the squirrels
play, either from my screened porch or out of the upstairs window.
Attached is a photo of Sebastian "caught" watching squirrels.

Please let his foster mother, Becky, know that he is doing well.

Hi!!

My name is Alice Buckner, the Palm Beach Dog Whisperer. I have lived here all my life
and have trained dogs for the better part of it using Motivational Techniques.

The day after losing my beloved Siamese cat, Lucy Loo after several years
of battling one health crisis after another I went to Pet Supply Plus for dog food.

I had been up all night and that day crying, an absolute wreck. I was hiding behind big sunglasses
with tears flowing uncontrollably. How I drove myself there was a question as I could have gone
to a store much closer but it was fate that brought me there.

A moment after I stepped in I saw the Adopt a Cat Foundation teaming with cats and kittens
all needing homes. I of course thought I should go the other way in respect for my Lucy.

It was then I found my Tiger Lily, just a mere handful  of spirit and tenacity.
I picked her up and cradled her next to my neck. I sat there and cried
knowing that I had been directed there by divine providence
and this tiny little kitten would be coming home with me.

Lily celebrated her fourth birthday this past Thanksgiving.
It is a fitting birthday for this lost little soul as she helped another lost soul,
Me to heal and to appreciate life and the spirit to survive.

Lily is the healthiest cat I have ever had and she has never met a stranger loving all
and any attention whether it be feline, canine or avian. She lives in a busy household
and is a perfect fit. I have attached a photo of her after her romp through the pillows
on the family room sectional!!!!!

Thank you for the opportunity to share my story and to thank Adopt a Cat
for their service to our community enriching the lives of all!!!!

I adopted a cat from Adopt a cat about 7 yrs. ago. he was about 5 months old and probably weighed 2 lbs.
He is now over 3 feet in length(yes I am not kidding) and weighs over 17 lbs. all muscle, very lanky.
His name is Charles and is best friends with another cat I rescued named Buddy, who is about 4 yrs old.
He has several stuffed animals he drags around the house and 2 pillows. He is just as happy as he can be.
I appreciate all the work any one does who helps run rescues for all animals
I have attached some pictures for you. Good luck and God Bless.

What a great idea for success stories...and yes, please share mine with others (pic's attached)!

When I heard Adopt-A-Cat needed help;
I came to just give a donation since I already adopted a kitty about one year ago,
from a neighbor who had dumped him on the street when they moved from their condo.

But, when I saw how many dear kitties needed loving homes, my heart went out to your cause.

I saw a very frightened little kitty hiding in the corner not looking so good.
He was the one that captured my heart, I knew I had to take him home with me.

I changed his temporary name "Ringo" to "Taylor" and he and my "Hunter" after several days
of trying to keep apart were introduced to each other. It did take a while for my older male cat
"Hunter" to accept "Taylor", there were some pretty noisy nights.

With constant love and attention given to both, they have now become best "buddies" !
They eat, play, sleep and groom each other, an occasional paw swat happens but that is to be expected.

I continue to work with "Taylor" he does not like to be picked up,
but he now comes to me and sleeps right along-side "Hunter" in bed with me!
He is becoming a more beautiful cat with a fantastic and loving personality!

My kitties really enjoy each other now, it is truly amazing how giving love can conquer all !
I am so happy to have both of these "little angel's" in my life, I have been truly blessed!

p.s.  Please give "Inga" my best regards and good wishes for all volunteers for all of your great deeds!

Sincerely,

Angel Schiller-Cruises Inc.

We adopted 2 young female cats from Adopt-A-Cat.  Their names are Cali (the calico) and Koda.
We had 3 senior cats ages 17 thru 15 that passed away and wanted to rebuild a family of furry friends.
Although we adopted them at different times, both gals have fit into our family very well.
Cali is fairly laid back but loves to play chase the hand under the sheets.  Koda is extremely lovable as well as a goofball.
Of all the cats I have ever had Koda has the most personality.  Pictures of the girls are attached.

Regards,
Gail Weeks

My name is Marla Hadley and I adopted Emily from Adopt a Cat 3 years ago. She turned 3 on April Fool’s Day!
She was very shy and scared of people as she was previously adopted by a woman about to get a divorce and her husband was angry.
Adopt a Cat discovered this and brought Emily back to be re-adopted. They were so insightful with her, noting to me that she would
require some extra love and softness and that she would likely be a one-person cat. She has indeed turned out to be a one person cat
and I’m the lucky person! She shies away from men but has grown so much in standing her ground against being afraid.
When she was a kitten, she used to curl up in the crook of my arm and today I still wake to find her sleeping there even though she’s grown
a bit big for it! She is the most affectionate cat I’ve ever had and just makes me smile and laugh every day. It’s especially fun because
most people assume she’s a reclusive girl but then she’ll surprise everyone by parking herself on my shoulder or under an arm
to watch them at a safe distance. She also managed to make a great friendship with my existing cat, Betsy, a moody Calico,
which was no easy task.
Thanks, Adopt a Cat!

Emily

Chuck Sheehan here and  I've been a volunteer too.

On the very 1st day I worked at the shelter with Inga & Lisa.
I walked in and this gorgeous little black kitty immediately began following me around and kept following me all day.......
Her name is SPOOKY..and I ended up taking her home that night and she's been my "love" ever since!!!!

They have said "your cat" picks you - and SPOOKY definitely did THAT !

She's been such a little angel with fur ever since and makes life a real treat just waking up in the morning to her little furry claws
patting my head and annoying me 'till I wake up and give her the salmon "treats" she's so addicted to now!!!

She incremented me from that 1st night from the generic plain wet food on up through about 5 different and ever-increasing priced
types, until she "arrived" me at of COURSE-the most expensive one!!!

I love my little SPOOKY and she gives such perfect love with those pretty little eyes and kitty "look" as she stares up with such
trusting abandon....!!!!
Spooky

I adopted a kitty last June named Hershey.  Hershey is a long hair black kitty with a sweet personality.
When I first got him I was not sure that it was going to work out for us. He was so scared and then he got very sick on me and I had
to medicate him with three medications twice a day. Poor thing thought I was going to medicate him every time he saw me for a while.
Thankfully we got over that stage and he now greets me at the door when I get home from work for pets and rubs.
It took time and patience but he is a very loving kitty who is still changing everyday with more trust and love.
